Our last blog post talked about what to wear for your boudoir photography session. This time we’re going to talk about the ways you can personalize your shoot. Some of that falls into wardrobe and some of it doesn’t.
Whether you are doing boudoir simply for yourself or for a mate there are a lot of things you can do to make it personal. When you think of boudoir photography you probably think of sexy photography. But we’ve talked a lot about how “sexy” is in the eye of the beholder and this is where personalization comes in.
We all have things that make us who we are and often those are the same things that our mate finds endearing and sexy. They may not have found hockey equipment particularly sexy until they saw the woman they love don full gear and hit the ice. It can be the association that turns things around.
Does your partner love your reading glasses? Wear them for some of the shots. Are you an amazing cook? Bring some kitchen tools or your favorite apron.
One of our clients said her partner always said she looked sexy washing the dishes so she brought her rubber gloves and a plate. Now, whether he’s actually turned on by dishwashing or this is a Tom Sawyer painting the fence type of situation is their business but it’s a part of their story and special to them. The images were amazing.
And another thing your mate will probably find ridiculously sexy is if you make it about them. It doesn’t have to be Neanderthal but a little territorial marking and pride of “ownership” can be super sexy. You can wear the dress shirt they wear to the office over your sexiest lingerie. Their firefighter regalia. His high school football practice jersey. Her favorite guitar. Whatever you bring I guarantee they will never look at it the same way again.
So before you come for your session you should put some thought into how you can personalize the shoot. It could be the nightie you wore on your honeymoon. Or the book you were both reading when you met. Maybe your mate’s golf clubs or favorite comic books.
Get as creative and personal as you can. We love a challenge. One of our clients likes to ride motorcycles with her boyfriend so she brought her motorcycle. Her. Motorcycle. We talked about it beforehand, since that’s not the kind of thing to spring on us, she came on the weekend during off hours and we shot her and the bike in our building’s freight elevator. Challenge accepted and conquered.
Don’t be afraid to bring it. And if you are hesitant just give us a call or email us to find out what we think. Chances are pretty high that we’ll think it’s a great idea and we’ll give you the encouragement you need to feel good about your choices. You know yourself and your relationship better than we do. But remember, if you’re going to need the freight elevator to get it up two flights of stairs then we might need some advance warning. But it will definitely be worth it. Boudoir photography is sexy photography and sexy is what you make it.
