Boudoir photography can be a scary thing. Not for us, the photographers. For us it’s pretty much just a normal day. But we do understand that, for the average client, it’s anything but a normal day.
Putting on a bathing suit and going to a place where everyone else will also be in bathing suits can be daunting. Here’s an experience where you strip down to your underwear in a room where everyone else will be fully clothed. And then someone is going to capture it in photographs!
Most clients come in nervous and they readily admit this to us. We’ve always said that our first job is to help them be comfortable with us and our second job is to help them be comfortable with themselves. This can take a little while. Some women are even visibly shaking when we first start out.
It’s a little bit like I would imagine skydiving would feel like. A little bit. When you first jump out of the airplane it’s all about the fear. You’re free falling and wondering why you decided to do this in the first place. But then the chute opens, your heart rate slows a little and you realize you’re probably not going to die.
At your boudoir session, you’re going to have that moment when you have to leave the dressing room or drop the robe. Pretty scary stuff. But we talk about your wardrobe, we help you with posing, we give you some tips that will help you in all future photos and we start to get to know each other. Before you know it you’re having fun.
By the time they leave our studio, most of our clients are on a little bit of an adrenaline high. They just did something thrilling and they had great fun doing it.There’s a sense of success and accomplishment. And most women leave feeling beautiful and empowered and a little more comfortable in their own skin.
This feeling can last for quite a while but we’ve been told by many of our clients that something strange can start to happen. Something a little insidious. They just had an amazing experience but all of a sudden they’re struck with a horrible thought, “What if I look horrible in the pictures?”
Sure they had a great time. Sure they FELT beautiful. But what if they look fat or old or not pretty enough? That’s what most of us have come to expect of ourselves. What we’ve all been told to believe of ourselves.
So by the time the client comes back for the viewing session where they see their images for the first time, that nervousness has ramped back up again. We’ve even been told by many clients that they are more nervous about viewing their images than they were about stripping down for strangers with a camera.
But the fear is always unfounded. We’ve never had a client who didn’t look absolutely gorgeous in their boudoir photos. Because the truth is that everyone is beautiful in their own way. Sometimes they just need some help to see it. For us, that’s what doing boudoir photography is all about. You. Super hot. Just the way you are.
When a client looks at their images and thanks us for making them look beautiful it feels amazing. But we have to tell them that we didn’t MAKE them look beautiful. We just helped them to see that they ARE beautiful. That relief at seeing their own beauty is just a part of the roller coaster of emotions that can come with a boudoir session. But who doesn’t love a good thrill every now and then?
